Part 5 Worldwide Recognition
1. Organizing the 2007 World Robot Olympiad (WRO)
“The World Robot Olympiad” (WRO) is an annual international robot competition and a great educational event aimed at cultivating creative and logical thinking among youngsters. Taipei City hosted the 2007 WRO, organized jointly by the Department of Education, the ESUN Robot Association in Taiwan,and National Taiwan University. Taipei City schools took home 5 awards -- 2 Gold, 1 Silver, and 2 Bronze -- making Taipei the ranking city with the most awards.
2. International CyberFair
“The International CyberFair” is organized by the Global SchoolNet Foundation for elementary and junior high school students to work as a team to explore the local culture and environment and to showcase them on the Internet. In 2007, schools from Taipei won 2 Platinum, 5 Gold, and 3 Silver Medals,and 5 honorable mentions at the CyberFair. The 15-award achievement made Taipei City the top winner from Taiwan in bringing home awards. Two projects,“Wonderful! Pineapple Pastries As Gold Bricks”entered by Taipei Municipal Guangfu Elementary School, and “Operation Greenhouse Effect” by Taipei Municipal Binjiang Elementary School, were both platinum winners with outstanding performances.
3. The 2007 Intelligent Cities ICT Forum
The “2007 Intelligent Cities ICT Forum” was held on March 28 and 29, 2007 in Taipei. Member cities of the “Asian Network of Major Cities 21” (ANMC21), including Tokyo, Jakarta, Seoul, and Kuala Lumpur,were invited. Also attending was the delegation led by John Jung, ICF Chair, and Breda Halloran, Mayor of Waterloo City in Canada. Along with representatives from industry, government, and academia in Taiwan,the participants shared their knowledge of IT application achievements and their views about further directions in IT development. The Forum also discussed the possible model for city-to-city cooperation.Taipei City and the ANMC21 member cities jointly presented the results of and lessons learned in building an intelligent city.
In the future, Taipei City will guide its IT development efforts with goals of IT integration, business operation integration, and service integration, advancing IT management further into IT governance. Soon,the Taipei City Government intends to introduce a series of integrated digital services that seek to provide warm and thoughtful experiences to city residents.
